Dandy spearheaded the idea for the late-start school after seeing research on how the teen brain, at puberty, secretes the chemical that induces sleep around 11 p.m. and doesnt shut off until 8 a.m.

An international look at how a late start to the school day benefits teens will include one example close to home Torontos Eastern Commerce Collegiate.

Also, teens need 8.5 to 9 hours of sleep a night though few get that much.

Eastern students also, on average, get seven hours and 50 minutes of sleep a night half an hour more than a control group at another Toronto high school. Almost one-quarter of Eastern students sleep nine hours a night.

Eastern will be cited in the review, and could also be included in the data analysis, said Davison.

Davison, who has a doctorate in popeastern healToronto school part of international late-start studyulation health and epidemiology, said she is interested in the structure of schooling and its impact on student health.

An interim report on Eastern, released Wednesday, showed students grades had increased, as had credits earned, since the hour delay to the school day.

For her PhD, she studied a First Nations high school that changed the school day the lunch period shorter, from 65 to 35 minutes and just by doing that, changed the social dynamics and (lessened) vandalism, she said. . . . There was a lot less conflict.

Davison expects her late-start research to be completed before September.
