These scholarships are made possible through the Joseph Hageman Memorial Nursing Scholarship Fund. The scholarship fund is named for Joe Hageman, a longtime nurse and employee of the CarolinaEast Health System, who passed away in 2006. These scholarships are available for students pursuing Bachelor of Science degrees in Nursing or an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing.

Kelsie Bryant is the daughter of Lori Meads and Paul Bryant III of New Bern. Kelsie graduated from New Bern High School in 2009. Kelsie is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing at Western Carolina University. She is a member of the Honors College, Alpha Lambda Delta Honor Society, Association of Nursing Students, Reformed University Fellowship and Nurses Christian Fellowship. From a young age, Kelsie knew she wanted to have a career that would allow her to help others. My parents always emphasized I should enjoy what I do, said Kelsie. Now that I am in the nursing program, I know I made the right decision in this career path. Knowing this scholarship was started in honor of Mr. Joe Hageman, who also loved his career choice, I am honored to have been selected as it will help me continue my career path as a dedicated nurse. Kelsie plans to earn her Masters in Anesthesia after she graduates from nursing school.

Travis Marquardt is the son of Anita Lindsey of Attalla, Alabama and Joe Marquardt of Los Angeles, California. Travis was born and raised in Oakhurst, California. Travis graduated from Glencoe High School in Glencoe, Alabama. After graduation, Travis joined the United States Navy. He was trained as Hospital Corpsman and was an honorable discharged veteran after serving for 8 years. Travis graduated with honors from Everest College in 2006. Travis is pursuing an Associates Degree in Nursing at Craven Community College. Travis is currently employed at CarolinaEast Health Systems as a Certified Surgical Technician. I applied for the scholarship because I am inspired by the idea of males as nurses, said Travis. Mr. Hageman led the way for many of us men to make our way into the nursing profession. I hope to make a difference as he did in people’s lives. Travis plans to pursue a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing and eventually, work on his Masters degree.

Abigail Abby Taylor is the daughter of Richard and Paula Taylor of New Bern. Abby graduated from New Bern High School in 2007. Abby will graduate from N.C. State University in May 2011 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Nutrition Science. Abby is a member of the Golden Key Honor Society, Gamma Sigma Delta Honor Society and is graduating Summa Cum Laude from NCSU. She will be attending East Carolina University in the ll of 2011 to obtain her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing. After graduating from ECU in May 2013, Abby plans to return to Eastern North Carolina to become a nurse at a hospital. She hopes to work in a cardiac care unit, combining her degrees in nutrition and nursing. I plan to use this knowledge to provide cardiac patients with great nursing care and be able to offer nutritional advice to those who need it using my background in nutrition science, said Abby. As a nurse, I will be committed to providing dedicated and compassionate care to the patients that I work with.

Jennifer Wilson is the daughter of Gary and Lynn Wilson of Durham. Jennifer is originally from Pawtucket, Rhode Island. Jennifer graduated from New Bern High School in 1995. She is pursuing an Associates Degree in Nursing at Craven Community College. Jennifer is a member of the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, TRIO Leadership Team and has been on the Dean’s List at Craven Community College. This scholarship is immensely important to me because it allows me to provide a way to be a positive role model for my daughter to emulate, said Jennifer. I would like to personally thank the knowledgeable and empathetic nurses that I encountered along my travels whom have inspired this chosen profession. I will not let them, or my daughter down. Jennifer’s goal is to work with women in the area of obstetrics and gynecologyeastern healCarolinaEast Foundation awards four nursing scholarships to area students.

. The dinner will be held at the Flame Catering and Banquet Centre in New Bern.
