Work ongoing to implement colon cancer screening program, minister says/eastern heal,According to a news release, government has committed $4.3 million over three years to advance the program, with the goal to reduce mortality rates in the province associated with colon cancer.

The provincial government said today that significant progress continues to be made towards the implementation of the Provincial Colon Cancer Screening Program.

In the past year, Eastern Health has hired a manager for the screening program as well as a nurse who will serve as follow-up co-ordinator with participants. Eastern Health is currently recruiting for the position of medical director for the program. An advisory committee was formed in September to oversee the program, comprising representatives from the provincial government, the regional health authorities, the Canadian Cancer Society, gastroenterologist specialists, researchers, and Eastern Health lab directors.

Wasnt this to be have been rolled out about 1.5 years ago?Health NL needs to hire a Manager, a Nurse and a Director to make this happen, how much would this add to healthcare costs?How about more than five minutes ce-time between physician and patient and then the three-pak stool screening window can be used across the province before 2012.Just not performance Mr. Kennedy.

The Provincial Colon Cancer Screening Program, designed for men and women between the ages of 50 and 74 who are at average risk for colon cancer, is being administered by Eastern Health as part of its responsibility for the Provincial Cancer Care Program. The program will expand incrementally to encompass the entire province.
