FOR people with concerns about out-of-control gambling, asking for help is the hardest step.As part of Responsible Gambling Awareness Week, Eastern Health has reminded Knox residents, that local help is available.Turning Point Alcohol and Drug Centre gambling co-ordinator Simone Rodda said about 12,000 Victorians sought help in 2010.We are seeing a new group of clients coming through our online counselling service, including men in their early 20s.Ms Rodda said betting for some people started with amounts of $10 or $20, but could quickly escalate to thousands of dollars.They then worry about how to get money back and their quick-fix is to place another bet, she said. Gambling can start to take over and people seek help because they feel sick from worry, and down about feeling out of control. Turning Points gambling support service was available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
