Steve Jobs: We arent tracking anyone/public healt

because they probably thought it was a joke, that some numbskull would come up with a lame brained claim they were being TRACKED and were going to ignore it because of the sheer stupidity of it.

read the story … a whole five paragraphs. theyre not collecting your location info … the file has wi-fi hotspots listed … for the reason provided.

Well lets see here: The phone is not collecting data to track you, its collecting the data so it knows where it is and all the hot spots are. The thing is, since it is your phone, it does not take much to correlate you to the location of the phone in your pocket. Now that law enforcement knows of Steve Jobs: We arent tracking anyone/public healtthis file, you bet they will be asking for it if they want to track you in your travels. Apple itself may not be using the data to locate you specifically, but it could be done.

He added that the introduction of technology into society invariably involves a period of adjustment and education…We havent-as an industry-done a very good job educating people, I think, as to some of the more subtle things going on here. As such, (people) jumped to a lot of wrong conclusions in the last week.

Under the PATRIOT Act, the government can use iPhone data to track anyone they want. It would be a federal felony for Steve Jobs to admit that they were doing it. So you can draw whatever conclusion you want, but no one is going to say the data is being used to track anyone.

[Apple says what they found was a list of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers nearby and that that helps the phone figure out its location without having to listen for int signals from GPS satellites.]

Steve Jobs: We arent tracking anyone/public healt,Earlier today, Apple issued a statement to the effect that the data file uncovered by researchers and publicized last week is not a log of a phones location. Apple says what they found was a list of Wi-Fi hotspots and cell towers nearby and that that helps the phone figure out its location without having to listen for int signals from GPS satellites.

Get real, I SAW the supposed map in the news from the phone, you could see the path the phone took like reading a road map, trouble is, the resolution was such that about 3 of map was maybe 500 miles, yeah thats real pinpoint accuracy for ya!

Even in normal times, it takes quite a lot to get Steve Jobs to emerge from the Fortress of Solitude – aka Apples Cupertino, Calif. headquarters – and comment on tech issues of the day. Its even that much harder now that Apples CEO is on medical leave to tend to his health issues. But in a change from the usual script, Jobs broke with his usual reluctance to engage the public to offer his spin on the growing controversy involving the iPhones use of personal location information.

He also indicated that Apple representatives would appear before Congress and other regulatory bodies.

The phone has to seek and find hte towers and then output your signal, guess what, your lcoation can be determined by the TOWER your phone is reaching, thats how they determine how many minutes you talk and what the BILL will be.

I think Apple will be testifying, Jobs said. They have asked us to come and we will honor their request, of course.

Fact is, your cellphone tracks you already- how do you think you get the SIGNAL from the towers, especially when MOVING???

which makes perfect sense … since many people who had viewed the entries in the file claimed there were entries listed where they have never been. many of these claims of entries showing locations theyve never been to were listed in this and other online forums covering this story.

Yeah, if you are in NYC it will show that you are somewhere in midtown manhattan, yeah, im sure you are easily tracked right to the restroom stall you are sitting in.

how would you explain the references by many iphone owners who viewed this file rendered on a map and claimed that there were locations listed they have never been to? what are these locations … if there not tracked locations of the user?

So it was that Jobs hammered home that message with a subsequent interview with the tech blog AllThingsDigital, the case that the critics got it wrong. We havent been tracking anyone, Jobs said. The files they found on these phones, as we explained, it turned out were basically files we have built through anonymous, crowdsourced information that we collect from the tens of millions of iPhones out there.
