The head of the Eastern Capes embattled health department, Dr Siva Pillay, has rejected allegations that he approved payment for a private helicopter to fly the health MEC to an ANC Youth League conference in Port Elizabeth.

Pillay told his boss, MEC Sicelo Gqobana, all his appointments were legitimate and denied approving payment for a helicopter to transport the MEC to the ANCYL conference. It was privately paid for, he said.

Pillays accuser, former infrastructure chief director Malibongwe Mtuzula, was dismissed last August after the discovery that his three-year contract had erroneously been extended to five years.

In November, Mtuzula wrote to the provinces health portfolio committee, alleging that Pillays appointment of the chief director of supply chain management, Louis Chetty, Clayton Bhana as head of the emergency services and Dr Tami Sibeko as deputy director-general, were irregular.

Mtuzula also claimed Pillay appointed the architectural firm of a longtime friend to upgrade hospitals.
